I telephoned Mum, excited to tell her all about my new starring role.

‘Mum! Guess what just happened to me? I’m going to be a movie star in a film called Dogs in Space.’

‘Oh, you are NOT, dear! You haven’t even done an acting course, Lannaaah?’

‘I’m apparently a natural, Mum, Michael Hutchence said so … he’s a rock star.’

‘A rock star, Lannah? A ROCK star? Lannah, I have TOLD you before, dear … rocks in their heads! ROCKS! Not stars! What is this Hutchence fellow anyway … is he Catholic?’

I heard Mum calling out to my father, and I froze. I wasn’t a prime minister yet, I was only a character actress. This was not going to impress him.

‘Jimmy! JIMEEEE! Lannah’s got herself an acting job! Are you LISTENING to me, Jimmeeeee? Lannah’s playing a DRUG addict in a picture movie. She’s playing a dog … she’s acting like A DOG … a dog in space …’
